چکیده

AbstracL Remarkable advances in deyelopmental genetics in the pas"wo decades allow us to approach the eyolution of animal design by elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying diyeTgent body p]ans. The ancestry and eyolution of segmented body plans in the bilaterians has been an active area of inyestigation in this field of study. Although segmentation mechanisms have been extensively studied for the fruit fly Drosophila melanqgaste4 Dresophita exhibits an eyolutionarily deriyed mode of development, and molecular mechanisms underlying Drosophita segmentatio] may be unrepresentatiye for arthropods, eyen for insects. We have been studying the deyelopmental system of the cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, to anderstand more ancestral and general segmentation mechanisms for insects than those of Drosophila. In GtyUus, anterior segments are specfied a)most simultaneously, whereas posterior segments are specified

Ancestral functions of Delta/Notch signaling in the formation of body and leg segments in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

Delta/Notch signaling controls a wide spectrum of developmental processes, including body and leg segmentation in arthropods. The various functions of Delta/Notch signaling vary among species. For instance, in Cupiennius spiders, Delta/Notch signaling is essential for body and leg segmentation, whereas in Drosophila fruit flies it is involved in leg segmentation but not body segmentation. There...

The Segmented Urbilateria: A Testable Scenario1

SYNOPSIS. The idea that the last common ancestor of bilaterian animals (Urbilateria) was segmented has been raised recently on evidence coming from comparative molecular embryology. Leaving aside the complex debate on the value of genetic evidence, the morphological and developmental evidence in favor of a segmented Urbilateria are discussed in the light of the emerging molecular phylogeny of m...

Imaging of Transgenic Cricket Embryos Reveals Cell Movements Consistent with a Syncytial Patterning Mechanism

The mode of insect embryogenesis varies among species, reflecting adaptations to different life history strategies [1, 2]. In holometabolous insects, which include the model systems, such as the fruit fly and the red flour beetle, a large proportion of the blastoderm produces an embryo, whereas hemimetabolous embryos generally arise from a small region of the blastoderm [3]. Despite their impor...

On DC-Segmentation of Interconnected Power Systems

The ultimate goal of power system operation and planning is to increase power system reliability which enforces interconnected operation of power system. As a result of power system interconnection, the inter-area oscillation under different disturbances may cause power system partial or total blackout. DC-segmentation of interconnected power systems is a solution in which the topology of the n...

Segmentation in Tardigrada and diversification of segmental patterns in Panarthropoda.

The origin and diversification of segmented metazoan body plans has fascinated biologists for over a century. The superphylum Panarthropoda includes three phyla of segmented animals-Euarthropoda, Onychophora, and Tardigrada. This superphylum includes representatives with relatively simple and representatives with relatively complex segmented body plans. At one extreme of this continuum, euarthr...
